Who We Are

NewGlobe supports visionary governments to transform public education systems, the cornerstone of a prosperous, equitable, and peaceful society.

With a comprehensive system transformation platform and data-driven educational services, NewGlobe delivers rapid and dramatic improvements in learning outcomes at state and nationwide scale. Through building impactful partnerships and programmes, NewGlobe ensures that all children have access to an education that will develop their full potential and create a foundation for growth and prosperity.

NewGlobe leverages more than a decade of educational experience and proven impact in integrated school management, teacher professional development, instructional design innovation, technological system support, child-centered classroom practice, and parent engagement -- all grounded in learning science -- to ensure each teacher is empowered to engage children in transformational learning, and all children have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Every day, NewGlobe supports governments to solve what were once seen as intractable problems, and by doing so, ensures this generation will be able to grow up to lead more fulfilled lives, while simultaneously building economic prosperity for themselves, their communities, and the globe.

NewGlobe’s high-touch, intensive professional development programs, along with integrated school management, teacher support, and assessment software, enable schools to succeed. NewGlobe works within state and national curriculum and syllabi, ensuring all children are empowered to learn their own history, and master local content, while being globally competitive in mathematics and languages. The science of behaviour change and the science of learning is at the foundation of all programming.

NewGlobe works with urgency because youth quickly becomes adulthood and relentlessly because improvement requires continuous problem-solving. NewGlobe is honoured to serve and to help rebuild trust in public systems.

NewGlobe’s work is all encompassing and will challenge you to use your full mind, and heart, each day. We need bright minds who want to be part of building a new globe -- a more equitable globe -- to join us.

Academics

The objective of the Academics group is to drive student achievement. To do so, we must know -- what is happening minute-by-minute for the typical child. The student’s daily experience, and thus the path to achievement, emerges from their relationship with the teachers and the content that is delivered in the classroom. Our team is collaboratively organised around these levers. We develop rigorous content pitched at the right level for students to be delivered by a teacher who is prepared to succeed in the classroom. Our Instructional Design department builds the content using scientifically-proven techniques; our Production department ensures those materials reach classrooms; our Learning Innovation department looks at cutting-edge research to generate breakthrough learning gains. Underpinning all of this is the work of the independent Measurement and Evaluation group, which provides Academics with an empirical orientation toward improving that daily experience and, in turn, driving achievement.

Instructional Design

The Instructional Design department produces the learning materials that are used in our schools across our communities. This department has team members based in multiple Bridge support offices, organised into teams that each work on a portfolio of projects. Driving student achievement through the development of rigorous content is the number one priority. One core tenet of the approach is less lecture (traditional among many schools in our markets) and more student practice. Consistent, rigorous opportunities to refine his or her skills are crucial to a child’s learning progression. The Instructional Design department structures all lessons, textbooks, and other materials to ensure this.

About the Role

Instructional Design Associates are based in Boston, Nairobi, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kigali, and Lagos. This is a full-time role based in Lagos/ Hyderabad/ Delhi but will likely include remote collaboration with teams overseas.

As an Instructional Design Associate, you join a team working to make a difference in the world. In the markets we serve, the number of pupils attending school is soaring, but the quality of most schools, according to international experts, is low. Associates join our Instructional Design department to invest time in producing quality learning materials to improve thousands of children’s daily academic experience.

One core tenet of our approach to instruction at NewGlobe is providing extensive opportunities for pupil practice. That is, we're trying to make the pupil experience less "rote." We create “teacher guides” (daily lesson plans delivered by e-reader), textbooks, and other materials with that goal in mind -- all as a means to improving learning gains among pupils.

What You Will Do

  • Create and edit instructional materials, with an emphasis on assessments/detailed lesson plans/ homework books under the guidance of a manager with instructional expertise
  • Adhere to formatting and delivery requirements, including aspects of print production, such as writing art specs and styling manuscripts
  • Participate in ongoing pedagogical training in instructional design
  • Jump into new, unusual projects with other Academics or Instructional Design teams
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Should Have

  • 2+ years of experience in education, writing, or publishing
  • Fluency in English
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Consistent capacity to meet deadlines and meticulous attention to detail
  • High degree of professionalism in communication and time management
  • Ability and willingness to write, solve, and explain primary school maths problems
  • Flexibility, ability to process and respond to new information quickly
  • A team-oriented approach
  • Ability to receive and effectively apply feedback
  • Desire to engage creatively even with tedious or repetitive assignments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word

You’re also

  • A detailed doer – You have a track record of getting things done. You’re organized and responsive. You take ownership of every idea you touch and execute it to a fine level of detail, setting targets, engaging others, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. You can multi-task dozens of such projects at once and never lose sight of the details. Likely, you have some experience in a start-up or other rapid-growth company.
  • A networking mastermind – You excel at meeting new people and turning them into advocates.  You communicate in a clear, conscientious, and effective way in both written and oral speech. You can influence strangers in the course of a single conversation. Allies and colleagues will go to bat for your ideas. You have an existing network from prior experience in the country, preferably in the regulatory, education, or business sectors.
  • A creative problem-solver – Growing any business from scratch comes with massive and constant challenges. On top of that, NewGlobe works in often fragile, sometimes volatile low-resource communities and with complex government systems. You need to be flexible and ready to get everything done effectively, quickly, and affordably with the materials at hand.
  • A relentless advocate –The children we serve and teachers we empower never leave your mind. You know them, get them, have shared a meal with them (or would be happy to in the future). You would never shrink back from shaking a parent’s hand or picking up a crying child, no matter what the person was wearing or looked like.  Every decision you make considers their benefit, experience,
    and value.
  • A malleable learner –You believe you can always do better. You welcome constructive criticism and provide it freely to others.  You know you only get better tomorrow when others point out where you’ve missed things or failed today.
  • A curious investigator – You ask why a lot. You don’t just take what you see and accept it. You wonder why it is that way, and are aware that the world we see is created by human choices and actions – and it could be different. You wonder, and see the world as wonderful even when you want to change a part of it that is unjust.

The objective of the Academics group is to drive student achievement. To do so, we must know what is happening – minute-by-minute – for the typical child. The student’s daily experience, and thus the path to achievement, emerges from their relationship with the teachers and the content that is delivered in the classroom.

Our Regional Academics department collaborates with local education ministries to understand each programme’s syllabus and educational context. Our Instructional Design department then develops rigorous content, pitched at the right level and tailored to programme needs. Field officers visit classrooms and provide detailed feedback on lesson effectiveness, which triggers lesson revisions and improvements.

Underpinning all of this is the work of the independent Research, Measurement, and Evaluation group, which provides Academics with an empirical orientation toward improving that daily experience and, in turn, driving achievement.

Instructional Design Department

The Instructional Design department produces the learning materials that are used in schools across the communities where we work. This department has team members based in multiple NewGlobe support offices, organized into teams that each work on a portfolio of projects. Driving student achievement through the development of rigorous content is the number one priority. One core tenet of the approach is less lecture (traditional among many schools in our markets) and more student practice and teacher feedback. Consistent, rigorous opportunities to refine knowledge and skills are crucial to a child’s learning progression. The Instructional Design department structures all lessons, textbooks, and other materials to ensure this.

About the Role

The Course Creation team’s purpose is to create excellent “modules” (i.e., units and lesson plans) for commonly taught subjects like: geography, history, politics, religion, science, health, physical education and art. These learning materials are designed for use within multiple programmes across NewGlobe, so they need to be designed with built-in flexibility. Our team works closely with other teams in Instructional Design to adapt these materials to different programs across the world.

To do this work, members of our team need to:

  • Analyze syllabi and textbooks from NewGlobe programmes to find common areas of study. For example, hygiene is a very common topic across many programmes and grades in health and social studies classes.
  • Design units and script lesson plans to teach these common topics in effective, age-appropriate, and culturally appropriate ways. For example, a Content Writer might create a unit of lessons about hygiene for grades 1-3 and another for grades 4-6. The Writer must identify the best way to teach concepts that unify the content of the unit and sequence skills and topics in the best order for effective retention. In this case, the writer may start the unit with basic knowledge-building about the germ theory of disease and use that idea to explain why pupils need to wash hands with soap and water (to kill germs), especially before meals (when germs are on our hands and get into our mouths, they can make us sick).
  • Train other teams. We will collaborate with them to adapt the curriculum we write to different programmes and contexts.

We are a small team, and our work is complex and changes frequently. Team members must be flexible and willing to do tasks outside this official scope in order to successfully complete given projects.

Please note: This role is not remote -- it is hybrid - 3 days a week in our Cambridge, Massachusetts office are required.

What You Should Have

  • Background:
    • Three or more years of teaching experience in an elementary, middle, or high school
    • Strong academic background and general knowledge in areas like: geography, history, politics, religion, science, health, physical education, and/or art – you do not need to be an expert in every area, but you do need to be able to do effective research in every area, which requires some initial knowledge
    • Experience in writing unit and lesson plans
    • Experience in training or leading other adults
    • Bachelor’s degree
  • Skills:
    • Ability to explain new concepts simply, clearly, and concisely in writing
    • Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail
    • Ability to learn new content, systems, and processes quickly and independently
    • Strong command of English grammar and writing conventions
    • Ability to communicate clearly and positively, both verbally and in writing
  • Mindsets:
    • Commitment to pragmatism and flexibility – finding and doing what works for pupils and teachers in the contexts we work in – rather than ideological commitment to specific ideas about teaching and learning
    • Curiosity and deep interest in learning new things in all aspects of our work (e.g. understanding big ideas in agricultural science, how to script the perfect turn and talk, how to draw simple pictures in Microsoft Powerpoint – it’s all important!)
    • Enthusiasm for collaborating closely with a small team
    • Commitment to excellence in your work
    • Comfort with the idea of writing scripts for teachers to teach from
    • Flexibility with change

Why Work Here

  • Opportunity for impact: The Instructional Design department as a whole directly impacts the experiences of approximately two million children. Any one lesson you write may be used to teach hundreds of thousands of them. There are not many opportunities in education with the potential to positively impact so many.
  • Global collaboration: Instructional Design has offices in Cambridge, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kigali, and Lagos. We collaborate on projects frequently across offices and learn from each other.
  • Like-minded team: Across the globe, all of us are here for one reason: to help children get the quality education they deserve. Working with others who share this goal is a fulfilling part of our work.
  • Creative problem-solving: We often encounter novel problems and must act quickly to solve them in creative ways. You are not just applying a known template – you are actively involved in creating tools, products, and processes that have never existed before.

What to Expect from the Interview Process

We have a rigorous, merit-based hiring process. The process is designed to simulate the essential parts of the job and introduce you to your role in the business should you join our team. Apply via our website.

Our Instructional Design department builds the content; our Leadership & Development department trains teachers and school leaders using scientifically-proven techniques; our Learning Innovation department looks at cutting-edge research to generate breakthrough learning gains. Underpinning all of this is the work of the independent Measurement and Evaluation group, which provides Academics with an empirical orientation toward improving that daily experience and, in turn, driving achievement.

Instructional Design

The Instructional Design department produces the learning materials that are used in schools across the communities where we work. The Instructional Design department structures all lessons, textbooks, and other materials to ensure this.

About the Role

One of the teams within Instructional Design develops content for a leveled French Reading program that we use in our partnerships where French is the medium of instruction. This allows us to target reading instruction to the level of the students in a class based on their proficiency, and not the assigned grade level – the difference between these two things is often very great.

As the Content Writer on the French Reading team, you will report to a Director and contribute to a variety of projects related to developing content for the French Reading program. The nature of the projects you will work on may vary and we value flexibility and openness to change in this role. Examples of upcoming French Reading projects include:

  • Textbooks
    • In collaboration with a Specialist and a Director, develop the content for three termly textbooks for each level of the French Reading program.
    • Textbook content will include: vocabulary word lists, decodable fiction and nonfiction passages that align to the scope and sequence, images that correspond with the passages.
    • Work with the Product Manager to develop a plan for the images that will accompany textbook passages.
  • Teacher Guides
    • Based on the scope and sequence established by the Specialist, develop the instructional content for each level of the French Reading program. This includes: determining the lists of decodable words that align with the trajectory of sounds and word parts that will be taught; designing activities that teach vocabulary; developing content for fluency practice; planning the scope of written and oral comprehension; and creating scripted exercises.
    • Maintain and update team tools and systems for keeping track of the content.
    • Work with the Product to write the teacher guides.
  • Exams and Continuous Assessments
    • Determine the instructional content that will be assessed and plan the specific assessment items for each exam.

This work will require a deep understanding of the French language, along with effective, evidence-based reading strategies and familiarity with literacy content development. When executing projects, you will need to ensure that you are managing your time effectively and collaborating with relevant team members to meet deadlines. It will be important for you to develop strong systems of organization so that you and others can easily track your progress. As a whole, this role is a combination of content development, program management, and collaboration to ensure high quality production of deliverables.

What You Should Have

  • Advanced proficiency in French reading, writing, and speaking (Native speaker or bilingual)
  • At least 2-3 years of experience teaching reading in a French immersion setting (ideally at the primary level)
  • Pedagogical alignment with approaches based on systematic phonics, the science of reading, and scripted instruction
  • Experience developing French reading content
  • Openness to adapting instructional materials based on learning outcomes and implementation feedback from the field
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to collaborate with members of a team
  • Self-motivation and the ability to independently manage multiple projects
  • Clear communication skills – verbal and written
  • Bachelor’s degree

What We Offer

  • Opportunity for impact: The Instructional Design department as a whole directly impacts the experiences of over one million children
  • Flexible hybrid working arrangement (3 days in our Cambridge office, 2 days remote)
  • Health + Dental insurance
  • 20 paid leave days (excluding public holidays) and 6 sick days

Technology Group

Technology plays a critical role enabling us to provide transformative education at massive scale in highly resource constrained environments. This is one of the key elements that gives us the ability to deliver radically impactful programmes, creating brighter futures for a generation of children across the world each day. Technology spans several key functions, including product management, business intelligence, software development and IT operations.Working with us, passionate technologists have a chance to directly change the world.

The department is structured into cross-functional, self-organising teams that work together on projects, short and long, alongside product designers and key business stakeholders.

About the Role

NewGlobe has been data-driven from its inception, using a build-measure-learn approach to all aspects of service delivery. As a scale model business, we have an unprecedented opportunity to bring statistical power to all aspects of an educational operation, from the academics team using randomized controlled trials to validate the best teaching methods to the schools team understanding which factors contribute to teacher turnover to operational teams striving to improve our service delivery efficiency.

However, we have reached an inflection point where we need to take our data game to the next level. Instead of just providing data to our various departments, we need to start bringing to bear more sophisticated techniques to unlock the potential of our significant data sets. While we collect tens of thousands of data points every term from each of our academies – from the time spent on each page of a lesson to the billing and payment history of every pupil – we are yet to fully realize the potential energy of these data sets.

We’re looking to build our next generation Data Platform team in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, alongside our software and product teams. The role of the Data Engineer is at the forefront of that transformation, ensuring our data models and data aggregation processes are robust, scalable, and ready for whatever we dream up next.

  • Recommend solutions to improve new and existing database systems
  • Execute the migration of data from legacy systems to new solutions
  • Monitor the system performance by performing regular tests, troubleshooting, and integrating new features
  • Drive technical innovation and lead on new technology exploration

  • Contribute to the effective data governance of business data, including data quality, data management, data policies, business process management, and risk management surrounding the handling of business data
  • Communicate with business and outside actors to develop requirements for our data platform

What You Should Have

  • Passion for Business Intelligence Development across a variety of tools and technologies
  • Specific familiarity with Microsoft technologies, especially Microsoft SQL Server, SSRS and SSIS (current systems); but also interested in Hadoop, Apache Spark, Kafka, etc., and to advocate for their appropriate adoption at NewGlobe

  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast paced environment

Partnership Launch

Partnership Launch brings the majority of our extensive breadth of technical expertise to ensure large scale transformation of education systems into one team. This team kick-starts new programs in new countries. Each member of the team is responsible for a core area of expertise, and then setting up all work and functions related to that expertise in the new program/new country. This includes putting all relevant policies, practices, systems and technology in place, and leading the hiring of the leader who will take charge of this work as the permanent lead for this body of work. This is our SWAT team, with specialists brought together to solve the critical and urgent problem of launching a state or nation-wide new program. This team must work collaboratively, thrive in creating order out of chaos, and understand that proactive problem solving is a daily task. All members of this team should expect extensive travel to remote and underserved areas, and to be resident in 2 other locations per year, setting up new programs. When not deployed on starting a specific program, each team member will do work with the core technical team which he or she represents, to support special projects, deepen technical knowledge, and otherwise advance in the field. This team is critical to delivering on our shared vision of transforming the lives of 10,000,000+ children, and in so doing seeing peace and prosperity where we work.

Academics

The objective of Academics is to drive student achievement. To do so, we must know -- what is happening minute-by-minute for the typical child. The student’s daily experience, and thus the path to achievement, emerges from their relationship with the teachers and the content that is delivered in the classroom. Our team is collaboratively organized around these levers. We develop rigorous content pitched at the right level for students to be delivered by a teacher who is prepared to succeed in the classroom.

About the Role

The Academic Director for the Partnership Launch group is responsible for the successful debut of all academic programming in a new territory. The inaugural cohort of schools in any territory could range from the 100s to the 1000s, and every single school must be prepared to deploy a world-class

This plan will cover course offerings, textbooks, assessment design, daily timetable, leveling of instructional materials, and more. In this role, you are also responsible for initial technical consultation with government curriculum leaders and policy makers. Eventually, you will hire your permanent replacement for this market, ensuring (s)he is set up to succeed even after you leave to begin work in another new market. This role would report directly to the Senior Director, Partnership Launch.

About the Role

The Managing Director is responsible for providing overall leadership management and general technical direction of the entire program, ensuring an integrated vision among different components, functions and stakeholders, and a focus on achieving the results defined in the contract. You will be responsible for leading and overseeing the development, delivery and day-to-day management of a high quality, innovative, cost effective and sustainable education program resulting in immediate and lasting change for children and building the capacity of the duty bearers. This is a highly hands-on job, involving intense program management, broad technical knowledge covering financial management, supply chain, government relations and school operations management. For this role, we need someone who has the experience of managing highly complex and large programs with a lean team coupled with a deep passion for programme mission. Leadership, humility and self-awareness are a must to be successful. This is an incredibly fast-paced and absorbing role that will ask a lot of you but it will also be personally rewarding in that you will see the impact of your efforts first hand.

Corporate Affairs

The Corporate Affairs group is the eyes, ears and public face of the organisation. It leads on strategy and is responsible for influencing and strengthening the internal and external landscapes that surrounds and impacts NewGlobe and its growing portfolio. The Corporate Affairs group is responsible for the public reputation of NewGlobe and its programmes, creating environments that support programmatic growth through engaging with stakeholders, influencing policy making and designing impactful communications.

The Corporate Affairs strategy is based upon a deep understanding, and awareness of, national and global trends, policies, regulatory changes and current affairs. It leads the overall strategic direction and implementation of initiatives and strategies across multiple channels, audiences and geographies.

The Corporate Affairs group always takes both a national and global perspective and is highly attuned to the nuances of frequently evolving politics and policy issues. Its work is based upon both an in-depth understanding of NewGlobe, its programmes and the broader global and national education landscapes in which it operates. Through this, it devices strategies that connect NewGlobe’s programming with a diverse, and ever-expanding set of stakeholders.

Communications

The Communications team is housed with the Corporate Affairs group. It collaborates across departments and programmes to create and execute compelling strategies; locally and globally.

Communications has a wide portfolio of responsibilities including external and internal relations, advocacy, strategy, digital, reputation management and media relations. We are focused on ensuring that the exceptional achievements being made across a wide portfolio of programming are effectively and impactfully communicated.

We lead, develop and support strategies in multiple programmes and continents simultaneously; shaping and influencing the external environments in which we work. We pride ourselves in being able to respond quickly and effectively at all times.

About the Role

As Director, Communications, you will be the communications lead for a large scale government education programme. You will support the government in the creation and delivery of communications strategies and ensure that the programme is being communicated effectively to a wide range of stakeholders both at a statewide, national and international level. You will be able to leverage relationships to influence communications approaches and build strong advocacy platforms to further the aims and ambitions of the work. You will create, write and design content that is both compelling and impactful; that places your programme at the core of the group communications strategy in Nigeria.

What You Will Do

  • Manage the communications for a statewide government education programme.
  • Act as the communications lead for a government communications team and programme.
  • Develop compelling communications strategies for the promotion of the programme within Nigeria and internationally.
  • Directly manage media engagement and cultivate media contacts.
  • Pitch stories to both national and local media to achieve high visibility for print, broadcast, TV and online media outlets.
  • Evaluate opportunities for communications partnerships and platforms that will strengthen the programme.
  • Act as a spokesperson and represent the programme in local and national forums.
  • Build a strong advocacy engagement programme with national and multinational partners.
  • Write clear and compelling pitches, press releases and articles.
  • Support the government to develop content strategies for digital communications.
  • Identify media trends, news cycle opportunities.
  • Support internal communications initiatives to promote the programme.
  • Analyse and measure results of communications initiatives.
  • Work closely within the Nigerian communications group to ensure that the communications strategy for the programme is advanced and complementary to the group strategy.

What You Should Have

  • A Master’s degree
  • 8+years relevant experience in communications.
  • Experience of working with or for the government in a communications capacity.
  • Experience in Nigeria of working in communications for political, campaigning, non-profit, or social enterprise. Experience with a multinational organisation is a plus.
  • Experience working within a matrixed global organisation.
  • Strong experience of creating and executing communications plans and strategies.
  • An established network of local and national media contacts.
  • Experience of being the lead external relations contact for media and stakeholders.
  • A strong sense of the news agenda and ability to make issues and campaigns relevant.
  • Experience of handling crisis communications.
  • Experience of supporting the creation and delivery of social media and digital campaigns.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills.
  • A strong-sense of teamwork and ability to both manage and execute programmes.
  • An extremely proactive and determined attitude.
  • Prior experience within a fast-paced, disruptor, metric driven consulting or educational organisation is a bonus.

  • A creative problem-solver – Growing any organisation or programme from scratch and at scale comes with massive and constant challenges.

Partnerships (Program Management)

The Policy & Partnerships team engages with visionary political and Government leadership to help shape policy, strengthen delivery and impact complex education systems through comprehensive technical support. We work to ensure policies support children’s access, opportunity and advancement, and that there is an enabling environment for governments to work with technical assistance partners to enact large-scale system transformation. We ensure close collaboration, communication, and engagement with our government partners whom we serve in existing programs and the rest of the delivery teams to ensure we deliver on the promise of our program, that the government sees solutions coming to the fore, and is participating in the work and recognizes the impact taking place. In support of the government program, may also engage with other dynamic influencers (NGOs, think tanks, academicians, and bi- and multilateral agencies) to unlock additional support for our government programming and children in underserved communities. Academic Department

About the Role

  • The Manager Academics will ultimately be responsible for educational outcomes across schools.
  • The Manager Academics will project manage all academic events and initiatives. This work will require coordination between NewGlobe education specialists known as Shared Services who work in instructional design, production, training, and innovation. This work will be codified in a yearly academic plan, which the Academic Manager owns.
  • Within the team, the Manager Academics will work with all departments (e.g. Operations, Schools, People Operations) to ensure that all schools have the right operational conditions for learning to take place. The Manager Academics is the resident expert that will push for student achievement through defending the organization's approach and educating government officials, fellow staff members, and school communities.
  • The programme is a dynamic one that is changing the way students learn in the state through proven methods and constant innovation. The Manager Academics is central to unearthing what works in these classrooms. The Manager Academics, in collaboration with Shared Services, will design, implement and assess various targeted projects that build on the quality of the programme.

What You Will Do

  • Lead execution and interdepartmental coordination of the core academic program in the state through the creation of the Academic Plan.

  • Identify areas of growth within our Academic offerings and create programmes/policies that improve student learning and school operations.
  • Manage the Academics team based in your territory.
  • The Manager Academics will report to the Managing Director.

Technology Group

Technology plays a critical role enabling us to provide transformative education at massive scale in highly resource constrained environments. This is one of the key elements that gives us the ability to deliver radically impactful programmes, creating brighter futures for a generation of children across the world each day. Technology spans several key functions, including product management, business intelligence, software development and IT operations.

Working with us, passionate technologists have a chance to directly change the world.

Software Development Department

The software development department handles all aspects of delivery related to our custom software applications and services - everything that it takes to turn an idea into working software and delivering value to our users. The department is structured into cross-functional, self-organizing teams that work together on projects, short and long, alongside product designers and key business stakeholders.

About the Role

All our teams run lean and need to cover a lot of ground - while pupil growth is exponential, the tech department’s size grows only very slightly. Enter automation, which gives us the leverage to balance supporting the systems that already teach hundreds of thousands of kids each day with our need to rapidly evolve our core technology offering.

At NewGlobe, our teams are organising and autonomous cross-functional - meaning that a given software development team is responsible for everything needed to deliver a product, from design through deployment into production - we don’t have separate teams for testing and deployment. If you’re looking to be a gatekeeper, NewGlobe will not be right for you. If you’re looking to tell other people what to do or have someone else tell you what to do, NewGlobe is not your next company.

On the other hand, if you’re all about being an enabler of teams, about curiosity and innovation, and more than anything, about automation and repeatability, then NewGlobe might just be your next gig. If you get energy from being both a thought leader and also a peer and collaborator, NewGlobe might well be for you.

We’ve already got hundreds of build pipelines building and deploying our cloud-native microservices and applications to our AWS data centers, with more and more of them running in Docker containers - so we’re not at the beginning of our journey… but we are at the point of where we need to bring in someone to take us to the next level.

This role reports to the VP of Software Development, but will also work closely with the IT Operations teams and be an important connector between departments.

What You Will Do

  • More than anything, evangelize a culture of automation and repeatability across all our tech teams and departments - and then get your hands dirty working directly with our teams to make it a reality
  • Own, maintain, and evolve our continuous delivery platforms, ensuring we’ve got the right tools and platforms - and that we’re making the best use of them to meet our needs
  • Look after the continuous delivery infrastructure, ensuring high availability and reliability, while also being cost sensitive
  • Help resolve “works on my machine” automated testing issues by pairing with our QA engineers and software developers to run down environmental, network, or other complicating factors
  • Review, improve, and define our server provisioning process (by the way, we currently use masterless Puppet… mostly)
  • Collaborate with software and IT infrastructure teams to design and implement our next-generation deployment architecture, with scalability in mind - clustering, autoscaling, blue-green deployments
  • Design, build and improve our production monitoring and alerting capabilities.
  • Firefight production issues when needed.

What You Should Have

  • Should be able to solve problems occurring with our highly available production systems and build solutions and automation to prevent them from happening again;
  • Experience in Site Reliability, building, Release, and maintain complex and scalable systems
  • Solid experience in C# and .NET environments is highly preferred
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code technologies;
  • Hands-on experience in a couple of Code as Infrastructure tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.)
  • Experience with AWS or other public cloud services
  • Solid foundation in Linux administration and troubleshooting;
  • Additional experience in Kubernetes, Networking, Security or Storage is desirable;
  • Monitoring/observability technologies like Prometheus, Graphite, Grafana, Kibana, and Elasticsearch
  • 3+ years of commercial DevOps experience at the enterprise level. 5+ years overall commercial software experience at the enterprise level
  • Hands-on experience across at least a couple of continuous delivery platforms (e.g. Jenkins, Go.CD, CircleCI, TFS, Octopus). We are using GO.CD at NewGlobe.
  • Experience in containerisation (Docker) and containerisation infrastructure (Kubernetes, DockerSwarm, etc.)
  • Expertise in Windows and Linux, fluency with Bash or PowerShell.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to make a difference for children every day at a proven, internationally recognized, mission-driven company.
  • Hybrid working arrangement.
  • Take the lead and help us grow our engineering team
  • The opportunity to work on challenging and innovative projects

Values of Successful Employees at NewGlobe

Technology Group

Technology plays a critical role enabling us to provide transformative education at massive scale in highly resource constrained environments. This is one of the key elements that gives us the ability to deliver radically impactful programmes, creating brighter futures for a generation of children across the world each day. Working with us, passionate technologists have a chance to directly change the world. No kidding.

The software development department handles all aspects of delivery related to our custom software applications and services - everything that it takes to turn an idea into working software and delivering value to our users. The department is structured into cross-functional, self-organising teams that work together on projects, short and long, alongside product designers and key business stakeholders.

About the Role

We are looking for a full time Quality Assurance Engineer to join our new Lagos, cross-functional software development teams, which will build the software that powers and improves our platform of educational tools. The Lagos team will have a special focus on the parts of the system that are more customer facing, experimental, or strategically important. The key to the QA role on our teams is  being a divergent thinker with a curious mind - a collaborator with developers in building great software, not an adversary, nor an order taker.

If you’re looking to be a gatekeeper, NewGlobe will not be right for you. If you’re looking to get a perfect set of requirements handed to you, NewGlobe will not be right for you. On the other hand, if you’re all about being an enabler of teams, curiosity and innovation, and more than anything, about automation and repeatability, then NewGlobe might just be your next gig.

You will report to one of our software development team leads.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with team members and business stakeholders to define acceptance criteria for software development projects, including participation in the design and estimation of new software to ensure that testing is not an afterthought
  • Create and execute testing plans that include an appropriate combination of manual and automated testing, carefully reporting issues using structured tools and standards
  • Advocate for a culture of automation and repeatability - and then get your hands dirty to make it a reality
  • Follow testing practices to ensure the functional correctness, usability, scalability, and security of NewGlobe software
  • Help resolve “works on my machine” automated testing issues by pairing with our software developers to run down environmental, network, or other complicating factors
  • Deliver and manage automated testing tools for the constantly evolving needs of our various software platforms, including a range of web and mobile applications running across a variety of devices
  • Integrate automated testing tools into build pipelines to promote a culture of continuous delivery
  • Participate in the design, rollout, and use of monitoring tools in order to identify and resolve issues and ensure continuous integration of data into warehouses
  • Devise approaches for validating and monitoring off-the-shelf and third-party software
  • Participate in the design and use of application monitoring tools to reduce mean time to response and to maximise uptime
  • Provide third-line technical support to in-house users

What You Should Have

  • Bachelor's degree with excellent academic performance
  • 4+years overall commercial software experience at the enterprise level
  • Experience with different testing tools and patterns, such as contract testing for APIs and  end-to-end testing for apps. Proficiency with other types of testing, such as load testing, penetration and security testing, or usability testing a major plus
  • Comfort with both Windows and Linux/Ubuntu
  • A desire to learn new tech stacks and frameworks - if you’ve only got experience in a particular platform and you think that makes it the right answer, NewGlobe is not right for you
  • Nice to haves:
  • DevOps experience at the enterprise level
  • Hands-on experience across with a continuous delivery platforms (e.g. Jenkins, Go.CD, CircleCI, TFS)
  • Hands-on experience with Code as Infrastructure tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.)
  • Experience in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)
  • Experience in containerisation (Docker) and containerisation infrastructure (Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, etc.)
  • A proactive mindset and comfort working without constant supervision
  • Flexibility to respond to the changing needs of the business
  • Ability to prioritise and carry out multiple tasks

NewGlobe’s work is all encompassing and will challenge you to use your full mind, and heart, each day. We need bright minds who want to be part of building a new globe -- a more equitable globe -- to join us.

Instructional Design

The Instructional Design department produces the learning materials that are used in our schools across our communities. This department has team members based in multiple NewGlobe support offices, organized into teams that each work on a portfolio of projects. Driving student achievement through the development of rigorous content is the number one priority.

As a specialist, you join a team working to make a difference in the world. In the markets we serve, the number of pupils attending school is soaring, but the quality of most schools, according to international experts, is low. Writers join our Instructional Design department to invest time in producing quality learning materials to improve thousands of children’s daily academic experience.

One core tenet of our approach to instruction at NewGlobe is providing extensive opportunities for pupil practice. That is, we're trying to make the pupil experience less "rote." We create “teacher guides” (daily lesson plans delivered by e-reader), textbooks, and other materials as a means to improving learning gains among pupils. We also create innovative resources for learning outside the classroom, in the form of radio programs, digital storybooks, activity packs, and downloadable learning guides

What You Will Do

  • Develop Hausa language courses for primary school pupils, based on the state syllabus and approved textbooks
  • Write detailed lesson plans, following NewGlobe standards and templates, with guidance from a supervisor with instructional expertise
  • Write Hausa language assessments
  • Support on Hausa language translation and other miscellaneous projects within Instructional Design or with other Academics departments

What You Should Have

  • A commitment to increasing educational quality and access in Nigeria and a belief in the power of scripted lessons
  • 2+ years of experience working in education in Nigeria (2+ years teaching preferred)
  • Expert-level fluency (written and verbal) in Hausa language and English; advanced study of Hausa language strongly preferred
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Flexibility, ability to process and respond to new information quickly, and excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent planning skills, commitment to meeting deadlines, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated instructional design experience strongly preferred

What to Expect from the Interview Process

We have a rigorous, merit-based hiring process. The process is designed to simulate the essential parts of the job and introduce you to your role in the business should you join our team.

  • A screening interview with a member of the TA team
  • A brief online assessment and personality inventory
  • A case study
  • A functional interview with the reporting manager
  • A values interview with a member of the hiring team
  • A reference check
